Waukee is in Dallas county. A 2004 special census estimates Waukee's population at 8,132. Waukee began as a stop along the Des Moines Valley Railroad that ran between Des Moines and Grand Junction, Iowa. Coal mining was an important industry in Waukee from around 1920 to around 1950.
